The magnetic mounting system is designed around flexibility. Instead of treating a security camera as something installed once and left in place, users can quickly change its position or viewing angle as needed. During a demonstration at IFA 2026, the camera could be repositioned three times in less than a minute. Its compact design can also allow it to be placed inside a vehicle for use as a dashcam.

Battery life is one of the Argus MagiCam's most notable features. The camera uses two standard AA lithium batteries and is rated for up to nine months of operation. Reolink built the device around Qualcomm's QCC730 low-power Wi-Fi chip from its Power Efficient Series, designed to reduce power consumption while the camera is in standby. When continuous wired recording is required, a USB-C port hidden beneath a rubber cover can provide power for 24/7 operation.

The camera itself combines a 1080p sensor with dual-band Wi-Fi, on-device person detection and local microSD storage, without requiring a monthly subscription. Its IP67 rating provides protection against dust and water, allowing it to serve in outdoor as well as indoor environments.

The physical design also moves away from the conventional visual language of security hardware. A matte PIR dome sits beside the glossy, ringed camera lens, while a pinhole microphone is positioned between them. The components sit on a raised, squared-off black module that gives the camera more of an action-camera appearance than the traditional bullet-style security camera.
Reolink offers the Argus MagiCam in black, white and mint green. The latter gives the otherwise utilitarian device a more approachable appearance, making it easier to place on a bookshelf or other visible surface.

The main trade-off is resolution. The Argus MagiCam records at 1080p rather than 4K, while its night vision uses a single monochrome IR LED. For a battery-powered camera focused on flexible placement and long operating time, however, Reolink is prioritizing practicality over maximum image resolution. The combination of replaceable AA batteries, magnetic mounting, local storage and low-power operation makes the MagiCam a security camera designed to be moved and used wherever it is needed, rather than permanently attached to a single location.
