As vehicle interiors continue to adopt larger touchscreen displays, concerns have grown over the amount of attention drivers must divert from the road. LG's Ultraview Windshield Display proposes a different approach by transforming the windshield into an intelligent display surface that presents information where drivers naturally look.

The prototype combines a traditional head-up display (HUD) with augmented reality projection. Navigation guidance, vehicle speed, media information, and driver assistance alerts are displayed at different virtual distances depending on their importance, allowing drivers to maintain focus on the road while viewing essential information.
In addition to driving data, the system creates a virtual 20-inch display that appears approximately 1.2 m (4 ft) in front of the driver for media playback, climate controls, and vehicle settings. When the vehicle is switched off, the display disappears completely, leaving the windshield clear without permanent tinting or masking.

Instead of relying on a physical dashboard screen, Ultraview uses a hybrid optical unit integrated into the dashboard to project images onto the windshield. Digital distortion-correction algorithms compensate for the curvature of the glass, producing a clear image without requiring specially manufactured windshields or fixed black masking areas commonly associated with some existing HUD systems.
According to LG, the complete dual-optical architecture occupies only 15 liters of dashboard space, making it significantly more compact than many previous wide-field augmented reality HUD designs that required much larger installations.

Another key feature is its context-aware display system. Information is projected at different focal depths according to its relevance to the driving environment, helping reduce unnecessary eye movement and cognitive workload while improving access to critical alerts.

The Ultraview Windshield Display is currently a prototype undergoing evaluation with several global automotive manufacturers. It has also been selected as a finalist in the Automotive News PACE Pilot Awards, which recognize emerging automotive technologies. Although the system is not yet commercially available, it reflects the industry's ongoing shift toward augmented reality interfaces that could eventually replace many conventional in-car displays while enhancing driver awareness and cabin design.
