The most distinctive addition is the new Retro Viewfinder, which replaces the standard Action Pod included with the regular Go 3S. Instead of using a touchscreen display, the accessory features a simple optical waist-level viewfinder inspired by mid-20th-century twin-lens reflex cameras. A small built-in mirror on the front also assists with selfie framing.

Unlike the standard Action Pod, the Retro Viewfinder contains no battery, display, or image processing hardware. The concept is intentionally minimalist, encouraging users to compose shots more instinctively rather than constantly monitoring a screen. Camera settings are instead adjusted through the Insta360 smartphone app using NFC connectivity.

Despite its vintage appearance, the Go 3S remains a fully capable action camera internally. The device supports 4K video recording, FlowState image stabilization, waterproofing down to 10 meters, and Insta360’s magnetic mounting system, allowing the camera to attach quickly to clothing or accessories for point-of-view shooting.
The camera uses a 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor that provides enough resolution for moderate cropping during editing. Because the optical viewfinder only offers approximate framing rather than exact composition, the camera relies heavily on its wide-angle perspective and stabilization system to keep footage usable in fast-moving situations.

To compensate for the lack of built-in power in the Retro Viewfinder, Insta360 includes an additional 393 mAh external battery alongside the camera’s integrated 310 mAh battery. Combined, the setup delivers up to 76 minutes of recording time.

Insta360 also expanded the software experience with three exclusive film-style filters and five additional color profiles, including Vintage Vacation and Mono, further reinforcing the analog-inspired aesthetic. The Retro Bundle reflects a broader industry trend where camera companies are experimenting not only with hardware specifications, but also with the emotional and stylistic experience of photography itself.
