Users can lift the fully assembled tent and reposition it without taking it apart, even while the rainfly remains attached. The trail weight, including the tent body, poles, and rainfly, is just 845 g. Adding the six included stakes still keeps the total setup under 907 g, while the complete packed weight, including accessories and storage bag, reaches approximately 936 g.
The tent features a true double-wall design consisting of a full-mesh inner tent and a separate rainfly. This configuration improves ventilation, reduces interior condensation, and provides greater flexibility in changing weather conditions while maintaining a lightweight package.
Designed for one occupant, the sleeping area measures 218 cm in length and tapers from 86 cm wide at the head to 55 cm at the foot. Although slightly narrower than some competing models, the layout remains suitable for minimalist backpackers. A peak height of 99 cm provides enough headroom for most users to sit comfortably inside.
The rainfly is constructed from Gossamer Gear's Clearskies fabric, a blend based on recycled high-tenacity 15D Robic nylon. Combined with a silicone and polyurethane water-resistant coating, a 20D ripstop grid, and factory-taped seams, the material offers a waterproof rating of 4,900 mm while maintaining durability and UV resistance.
The tent uses an X-shaped frame built with 8.7 mm DAC NFL aluminum poles connected through a central swivel hub. External clips and color-coded corners simplify setup, making the shelter quick to pitch even in changing outdoor conditions.
Packed down, The Free measures approximately 43 cm in length and 13 cm in diameter, making it easy to store inside a backpack or secure to a bicycle.
