(WorldKings.org) Some 15,000,000 people visit the palace, park, or gardens of Versailles every year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.

The Palace of Versailles is a former royal residence built by King Louis XIV located in Versailles, about 19 km west of Paris, France.

One of the greatest achievements in French 17th-century art, the Palace itself contains a staggering 2,300 rooms, with over 100 bearing witness to the lavish luxury of the former royal residence, and another 100 displaying the remarkable collection of paintings and sculptures of the Museum of French History, created by Louis-Philippe in 1837.

The architecture of the palace follows the standard rules of classicism such as symmetry of buildings, multi-column corridors. Inside are large rooms connected by corridors including: King's Room, Queen's Grand Room or Mirror Room, etc.

Versailles’ famous garden designed by André Le Nôtre is also the largest museum of outdoor sculptures in the world, with 221 works, dominated by great figures from Greco-Roman mythology and crowned by the famous Dragon Pool with its 27-meter-high fountain.

The palace and its grounds have had a great influence on architecture and horticulture from the mid-17th century to the end of the 18th century. Examples of works influenced by Versailles include Christopher Wren's work at Hampton Court Palace, Berlin Palace, the Palace of La Granja, Stockholm Palace, Ludwigsburg Palace, Karlsruhe Palace, Rastatt Palace, Nymphenburg Palace, Schleissheim Palace, and Esterházy Palace.

The Palace is open for visits year-round and includes bedrooms, the King's state apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, and some 2,300 rooms in total. Annual summer exhibitions highlight the works of prominent contemporary artists like Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, and Olafur Eliasson, whose art is displayed in the sprawling gardens. The old and new come together beautifully, a nod to its initial mission to support artistic creations.

Best to buy tickets online in advance (which varies according to how much you want to see), because lines can involve hours-long waits. Some 15,000,000 people visit the palace, park, or gardens of Versailles every year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
