Greatest roads in the world (P.72) Big Sur Coast Highway: The legendary scenic highway on the shore of Pacific Ocean

( The Big Sur Coast Highway is a beautiful and scenic highway that winds along the California coast. The highway is known for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, towering redwoods, and rugged coastline.

The Big Sur Coast Highway is a section of California State Route 1 that runs through the Big Sur region of California. It is widely considered to be one of the most scenic driving routes in the United States, if not the world. It passes through redwood forests, towering mountains, and dramatic cliffs. The road is known for its many scenic viewpoints, including Bixby Creek Bridge, McWay Falls, and Nepenthe Restaurant.

Bixby Creek Bridge is one of the most photographed spots on the Big Sur Coast Highway. It spans a deep gorge and offers breathtaking views of the coastline. The bridge has been featured in numerous films and television shows, including "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse", "Big Little Lies", and "Westworld". It is also a popular spot for weddings and other special events.

McWay Falls is another famous spot. It is a 25m tall waterfall on the coast of Big Sur in central California that flows year-round from McWay Creek into the Pacific Ocean. During high tide, it is a tidefall, a waterfall that empties directly into the ocean. The waterfall is accessible by a short trail from the parking lot. The trail winds through redwood trees and offers stunning views of the falls and the Pacific Ocean.

Pfeiffer Beach is the most famous beach along the route. This beach is known for its purple sand and dramatic cliffs. The cliffs at Pfeiffer Beach are made of sandstone and shale. They are over 200 million years old and have been shaped by the forces of erosion over time. The cliffs offer stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Big Sur coastline.

Besides the natural beauty, the legendary route also features many manmade stop spots. Nepenthe Restaurant is a popular tourist destination. The restaurant is located on a cliffside, and it offers panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding mountains. The views are especially beautiful at sunset when the sky is ablaze with color. It is known for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Big Sur coastline, as well as its delicious food and drinks.  And Point Sur historic lighthouse offers stunning views of the coastline. The lighthouse is located on a large volcanic rock that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse is 15 meters tall and is made of grouted concrete. The lighthouse is open for tours year-round. Tours last about an hour and take visitors to the top of the lighthouse, where they can see stunning views of the Big Sur coastline.

The road is a delight to drive, with every kind of twist and turn. In some places, this winding road has narrow shoulders and sharp drop-offs, so stay alert. This route can be tricky for RVs or other oversized vehicles. Every few years is closed by mud slides and washouts after torrential winter storms and even more destructive wildfires. Big Sur is still a wild place, with little or no cell phone reception.
