The company’s milestones:

1992: Ciena was founded in 1992 under the name HydraLite by electrical engineer David R. Huber.

1994: The name of the company was changed to Ciena. 



1998: Ciena’s long-haul optical transport platform enabled a service provider to transmit more than three million phone calls across a single fiber pair.

2001 - 2005: Despite a market downturn, Ciena made six bold acquisitions, investing heavily in its product portfolio and enhancing product functionality.

2006: Ciena opened a campus in Gurgaon, India. The campus focuses on research and development and was further expanded in 2018 to begin manufacturing products for local markets.

2008: Ciena established Ciena Cares as a donation-matching program, which has since evolved into a global community engagement program and a cornerstone of Ciena's culture.



2010: Ciena became the largest global supplier focused exclusively on the transition to converged optical-Ethernet-based networking.

2017: Ciena announced the availability of its WaveLogic coherent modem technology to optical component leaders Lumentum, NeoPhotonics, and Oclaro—addressing the industry’s shift toward disaggregated models and facilitating greater choice for network operators.

2018: Ciena and Sify partnered in mid-2018 to increase the information and communications technology company's network capacity from 100G to 400G.

2019: Bharti Airtel used Ciena equipment to build a 130,000 km photonic control plane network, connecting more than 4,000 locations in India.



2022: Ciena acquired Benu Networks and Tibit Communications to offer fully integrated broadband access solutions that combine routing, subscriber management, and PON features and functionality, to address residential broadband, enterprise business services, and fixed-wireless access use cases.
