The company was founded in Japan in 1899 and is the second-largest chain of gyūdon restaurants in the world. Yoshinoya is known for its affordable prices and quick service. Yoshinoya restaurants offer a variety of gyūdon dishes, as well as other Japanese favorites such as teriyaki chicken and udon noodles.


Yoshinoya has a chain of stores in Japan, the United States, Hong Kong, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

  • 1899: Yoshinoya first opened at the Nihonbashi fish market in Tokyo.
  • 1926: Yoshinoya moved to the new Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo
  • 1958: Mizuho Matsuda succeeded his father as president and establishes Yoshinoya Co., Ltd.
  • 1973: Yoshinoya entered the United States opening a corporate office in Denver
  • 1975: its first retail location opened in the US
  • 1987: Yoshinoya entered the Taiwanese market with the establishment of Taiwan Yoshinoya Co., Ltd. through a joint venture. It opened its first Asian branch outside Japan
  • 1991: The Hong Kong division of Yoshinoya was founded
  • 1992: Yoshinoya opened its first Chinese branch at Wangfujing, Beijing. The first Philippine franchisee of Yoshinoya was established, with its first store at Robinsons Galleria, Quezon City
  • 1993: Yoshinoya signed a franchise contract with a leading Indonesian company. The first Indonesian branch opened at Pondok Indah Mall, South Jakarta.
