(wcsa.world) Kumho Tire (formerly known as Samyang Tire) is a South Korean tire manufacturer.

The company is known for producing a wide range of tires for various vehicles, including passenger cars, trucks, and buses. Kumho Tire has been in operation for several decades and has established itself as a global player in the tire industry.



Kumho Tire runs three manufacturing facilities in South Korea: the Pyeongtaek Plant, the Gokseong Plant and the Gwangju Plant which includes the Kumho Research and Development center mentioned below. There are a further three plants in China and also a palnt in Vietnam.

  • 1960: It was founded by Park In-chon (Incheon) as Samyang Tire
  • 1963: The company established ties with US tire company Uniroyal, expanding their activity worldwide.
  • 1970s: Kumho expanded its operations and started exporting tires to various international markets.
  • 1976: Kumho Tire was producing more than one million tires per year and breaking records as a Korea-based tire manufacturer.
  • 1977: Kumho Tyre (UK) Ltd (a subsidiary of Kumho Tire Co., Inc.) was created
  • 1983: the total number of tires Kumho made surpassed 30 million
  • 1992: the company was awarded 10th place in the TOP-10 ranking of tire manufacturers worldwide, for the first time.
  • 1996: The company changed its name into Kumho Tire
  • 2009: the company began supplying original equipment truck tires to Benz, a first for any Korean tire manufacturer.
  • 2010: Kumho ranked first in Korea’s Customer Satisfaction Index (KCSI)
  • 2018: The Chinese tire company Doublestar acquired a 45% stake in Kumho Tire, becoming its largest shareholder.
  • 2023: Kumho Tire Co., Inc. is a leading global tire manufacturer with a presence in over 160 countries.
