  • 1969: Advanced Micro Devices was formally incorporated by Jerry Sanders, along with seven of his colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor
  • 1971: AMD entered the RAM chip market, beginning with the Am3101, a 64-bit bipolar RAM
  • 1972: The company goes public and shortly thereafter begins to make computer chips
  • 1982: AMD’s involvement with Intel (INTC) helps it steps things up a notch as it begins supplying computer chips to what later become the biggest name in the industry
  • 1991: AMD offers its own microprocessor, the Am386. AMD began to compete directly with Intel
  • 2000: the birth of Athlon processor. This was AMD’s big move, as it was the first 1-GHz microprocessor.
  • 2003: AMD announces the Opteron chip. This was the first computer chip made by AMD for use in servers. This ups the company’s spread of business
  • 2006: AMD acquires ATI Technologies, gaining access to video graphics cards for PCs.
  • 2014: Restructured into two segments, one focused on processors for PCs, and the other focused on enterprise endeavors for specialized equipment
  • 2018: AMD has announced their new lineup plans, with Ryzen 2. AMD launched CPUs with the 12nm Zen+ microarchitecture.
